Spa Pumps

Pumps are the hearts of all hot tubs. They can determine how well your hot tub recirculates water for filtration, as well as how powerful your jets will be. The number of pumps your hot tub has is another important factor to consider. Multiple pumps can give different people in the same hot tub full control of their own jets. But no matter how many pumps your hot tub has, or how strong they are, you'll want them to be as reliable as possible. For example, make sure they use corrosion-resistant parts and seals designed to withstand a hot tub's typically higher concentration of chemicals. Ask your salesman if the manufacturer tests their pumps. Ideally they should test them both before and after installing them in their hot tubs.

But pumps do eventually fail. And when they do, it's nice to have a hot tub that’s designed to allow a pump to be easily replaced. More often than not, replacing a pump requires a service technician to fully drain a hot tub prior to making this repair. Some manufacturers however (very few), use shut-off valves on both sides of a pump. This allows a service technician to quickly replace a pump without draining valuable hot water and precious chemicals. Convenient extras like shut off valves do have a nominal effect on the overall price of a hot tub, but if your hot tub ever needs just one pump replaced, this feature is well worth it.

Summary
Ask about number, power and quality of pumps. Does a spa's pumps use corrosion resistant parts and seals? How easy will it be to replace a failed pump? Does it require draining the tub?
