Spa Heaters

It's not a hot tub without heat right? So let's take a closer look at what goes into a quality spa heater. Unlike standard water heaters, a hot tub heater must withstand far more unfriendly conditions, including harsh chemicals, body oils, and extreme outside temperatures. So the two most important things to consider here are, how well a spa heater will work under these conditions, and of course how long it will last.

Stainless Steel Heaters
A great deal of spa heaters are made using Stainless Steel. Stainless steel can last almost indefinitely when exposed to the air we breath, because it creates it's own protective coating against oxidization and decomposition. But when exposed to water containing chemicals that can continuously strip away this protective coating, stainless steel heaters will pit and corrode like most metals, and eventually will need to be replaced.

Titanium Heaters
Titanium is the most corrosion resistant material used on spa heaters today. It is immune to pitting and corrosion from spa chemicals and excessive heat. Because of this, Titanium can outlast stainless steel heaters by nearly 10 years. The best titanium heaters will use titanium on both the heating coil and the outer jacket for maximum protection.

Since a heater replacement can cost several hundred dollars in labor and materials, it’s a good idea to ask what kind of heater your new hot tub will have. Again, this is another place many manufacturers cut costs, because they know this is something most customers don’t even think about.

Summary
Stainless Steel heaters are OK, but if given the choice, a Titanium heater will last up to 10 years longer than Stainless Steel. If Titanium heater is an option, but at an additional cost, you should consider life expectancy of heater and potential replacement costs when making your decision.
