Filtration Systems

The importance of a good filtration system is paramount to any good hot tub. Most people will agree that there’s no such thing as hot tub water that's too clean. So the more efficient the filtration system, the better off you’ll be. So what makes a good filtration system? Let's start by describing the two most common systems currently in use today.

Independent Circulation Pump System
Hot tubs with independent circulation pumps have filtration systems that operate constantly 24 hours a day. But since they operate at very low speeds, they are relatively quiet. Because of their slower speeds and quieter operation, they also tend to filter the least amount of water, recirculating a typical hot tub's contents about 16 times per day. They can clog easily with debris getting stuck in the impeller systems and narrow piping.

2-Speed Primary Pump System
The second most common system employs a 2 speed primary pump that operates at a higher speed and higher volume for just 2 to 5 hours twice each day. This method generates about 33 percent more filtration than the average independent circulation pump system, but is somewhat noisier during operation. If sitting in your tub during these cycles, you may find this to be disturbing. These systems too are subject to overheating from running at higher revolutions, and clogging due to foreign matter getting lodged in their plumbing systems.

Hybrid Filtration System
There is a newer filtration method that borrows from the best of both of these 2 systems. Like an independent circulation pump, it's quiet, because it runs 24 hours a day at a lower speed. But by using a larger motor and greater diameter piping, it can deliver 6 times the filtration of even 2 speed primary pumps, recirculating a tubs water at a whopping 144 times per day! A hybrid system also runs cooler, quieter, and requires minimal servicing, thanks to the larger piping and motor system.

Hybrid systems are unique to maybe one or two spa companies right now, and may even be branded with their own special name.

Summary
Independent pumps are quieter because they run constantly at lower speeds. Two-speed primary pumps filter more water, but are noisy during operation and potentially annoying when trying to enjoy quiet time your tub during these operation cycles. A hybrid filtration system runs quietly 24 hours a day, and filters 6 times the water of either system, thanks to a larger low velocity motor combined with a wider diameter piping system.
