Mass Merchants Large home center chains have recently entered into the industry of selling hot tubs. This is a benefit because they have succeeded in exposing the product to a wider audience of consumers, and often times sell the hot tubs at inexpensive prices.
There are some downsides to buying from a mass merchant. As mentioned above, while the hot tubs offered are usually very inexpensive, you will usually get what you pay for. In order to lower the price, the store will often modify the hot tub, possibly eliminating features that can result in making the hot tub more costly to operate. Not to mention that these spas often come with few features. Additionally, mass merchants often use independent companies to provide service and delivery. These independent companies are usually competitors that often do not bring the same immediacy or quality of delivery and service as if you had purchased from a specialty store or directly from the manufacturer.
Another thing to consider when purchasing from a mass merchant is the kind of hot tub education that you will receive. This is an especially important point if you are a first time buyer. Hot tubs require a great deal of instruction about care, operation, and maintenance, and more often than not, mass merchants cannot provide more than an adequate education. In addition, one of the most important aspects of purchasing a hot tub is a home site inspection, which is very difficult to be provided by the mass merchant industry.
If you are looking for an inexpensive "starter" hot tub with limited features, then a mass merchant may be a good choice. However, if you are looking for a quality hot tub, quality service and delivery, and a complete hot tub education, you may need to look elsewhere.
